Lesson in brief

A chemistry student’s form includes literature, an internship and work beyond the major. The episode asks how breadth and disciplinary depth can coexist. It reads the holistic-education chapter alongside later credit structures, and treats additional boxes on a form as a teaching responsibility: each course needs a purpose that students can understand and enough support for people entering from other fields.

What the video covers

A chemistry student’s form includes literature, an internship and work beyond the major. The episode asks how breadth and disciplinary depth can coexist. It reads the holistic-education chapter alongside later credit structures, and treats additional boxes on a form as a teaching responsibility: each course needs a purpose that students can understand and enough support for people entering from other fields.

The policy combines study across fields with rigorous specialisation in a chosen discipline. A major, minor or open course may bring different students, prerequisites and learning purposes into the same room. Separate the policy text, subsequent regulations, advisory frameworks and the university’s adopted curriculum.

Make assumed concepts explicit and provide a short introduction to the language, methods and expectations of the discipline. It requires students to use a second field to answer a real question rather than merely adding another subject label.

In practice: Locate your course in the approved curriculum and design one task that needs a method or source from another discipline.
