# Spring Semester 10: The 8.0 Cut-off

**Resource person:** GuruSetu - An animated series for teachers in Indian higher education

## Summary

A placement cutoff makes Tanvi feel that one closed gate determines her future. Pooja’s exhaustion exposes a different response to academic pressure. At the same time, a public rank list shows Arjun how his own assessment practices reproduce competition. Counselling, private feedback and clearer assessment design become connected parts of the response.

The desired cutoff becomes her only definition of success, even though other companies and kinds of work remain available. An observation about exhaustion can open a non-accusatory conversation about daily functioning and the pressures a student faces. They expose individual performance and encourage social comparison without helping students understand how to improve.

A rubric explains what good work looks like before assessment, giving students a route to improve against stated standards. Use appropriately spaced, lower-stakes opportunities with feedback, while checking the total workload across the course.

In practice: Review one high-stakes task, provide clear criteria and a smaller opportunity for feedback, and remove public ranked results.
