# Reading the NEP 08: Every Student

**Resource person:** GuruSetu - An animated series for teachers in Indian higher education

## Summary

The film follows the policy’s promise of opportunity to students who face barriers of money, language, distance, discrimination or disability. It separates government responsibilities from institutional ones and distinguishes faculty mentoring from professional counselling. The practical question is whether a student can find and use the promised support, rather than whether a policy document mentions it.

Fees, lost earnings, language, distance, inaccessible spaces and weak support can prevent participation even after a place is offered. The policy describes trained faculty mentoring alongside professional counselling; a teacher should know how to refer appropriately. It should respond to actual prerequisite knowledge and academic practices that students need for the course ahead.

Students should not have to disclose a crisis publicly or already know the system before finding scholarships, complaints routes or counselling. Name the barrier, the responsible service, the resources and the way the institution will learn whether access improved.

In practice: Introduce the campus counselling, scholarship and discrimination-complaint contacts in the first week, and plan a bridge using an entry task.
