# Reading the NEP 04: One Campus, Many Disciplines

**Resource person:** GuruSetu - An animated series for teachers in Indian higher education

## Summary

A small affiliated college asks what multidisciplinary education means for its future. The film reads the policy’s proposed institutional continuum and the aspiration to phase out affiliation, then separates those ideas from later cluster and merger guidance. Access matters alongside scale: travel, living costs and available subjects determine whether structural change benefits the students a college already serves.

It describes research-intensive universities, teaching-intensive universities and autonomous degree-granting colleges along a continuum. The policy’s scale and restructuring language does not by itself decide an individual college’s closure, merger or staff arrangements. They can involve different governance and employment arrangements; read the applicable guidance and written local proposal before drawing conclusions.

A wider subject menu may be offset by longer journeys, higher living costs or reduced access for students in small towns. It should show the institution’s proposed academic direction, resources and participation in decisions about departments, partnerships or autonomy.

In practice: Find your college’s status, enrolment and subject range, then read its development plan and propose one shared session with a neighbouring department.
