# Monsoon Semester 09: The Long Road

**Resource person:** GuruSetu - An animated series for teachers in Indian higher education

## Summary

It's 2 a.m. in the chemistry block. Sonam, a PhD student, has a busy, brief supervisor and nothing new to show. Arjun is about to take his first PhD student and drafts an eleven-page policy. Kamala cuts it to one page, a compact two people agree on together.

Research involves uncertainty; useful feedback identifies the work to revisit without turning the result into a judgement of worth. Agree when to meet, how quickly to respond and how feedback will be given and discussed. They give the scholar a dependable place to raise obstacles instead of guessing when support will become available.

Consider resources, payments, workload and guidance as well as the technical question being investigated. A shared agreement makes assumptions visible and gives both scholar and supervisor a reference for later conversations.

In practice: Agree three written norms with your research students: how often you meet, how quickly you reply, and how you give feedback.
