# Monsoon Semester 01: The Lamp and the Bridge

**Resource person:** GuruSetu - An animated series for teachers in Indian higher education

## Summary

Every July the rains arrive, and so do three hundred first-years. Arjun, a new professor, thinks student well-being is the counsellor's department. Kamala nearly went home in her own first year, until one teacher asked how she really was. She shows Arjun everyone on campus who notices, and what a teacher can be.

A teacher can notice changes, make a student feel welcome and connect them with appropriate support. It creates an everyday sign that a student is recognised as a person rather than an entry on a list. Peers, lab staff, hostel workers and other campus colleagues may see changes that a classroom teacher misses.

It is the practical connection between someone who needs help and the people or services able to provide it. Students encounter teachers routinely, so small reliable interactions can make support easier to find before a crisis.

In practice: Learn ten new names, starting with the students who sit at the back.
