# Governance Models: Highlights

1. Management handles plans and execution. Leadership sets direction and keeps dialogue open. Universities need both.
2. Apply rules consistently, then use judgement about how they work in a particular setting.
3. Listen to disagreement and explain decisions, especially when several groups are affected.
4. Connect national policy with the institution's mission and the needs of its community.
5. Consultation shows what may block a plan and who can help carry it through.
6. Fix the issue before looking for somebody to blame.
7. Integrity, accountability and the ability to adjust make governance credible.
